An Cosantóir-The Defence Forces Magazine 1916-2016 Issue

Published in March 2016, the 1916-2016 commemorative issue of “An Cosantóir” has among its 46-pages featured articles on the “Loss of the Aud,” the “Weapons of 1916,” the “1916 Women,” “British Soldiers in 1916,” the “Battle of Ashbourne” and the “Fires of Easter 1916.” Included with the magazine is the Defence Forces newsletter “Connect” which has a Map of Dublin in Easter Week 1916 showing the positions of both the Insurgents and the British Forces.

This 103-page book was published by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. It is a companion to the “Mná Exhibition” which was on display in the Dublin Castle Complex before travelling to venues in Cork, Galway, Cavan, Kildare, Wicklow, Waterford, Kerry, Louth and Donegal. The book tells the story of the 300 women who took part in Easter Week.

Easter Commemoration Digest 1916-2016

The Easter Commemoration Digest was published by Graphic Publications. It comprises 192-pages with 37 articles and numerous illustrations which relate to the 1916 Easter Rising. Among the articles of particular note are; Pádraig O’Hanrahan’s account of the Fianna; one of the last interviews given by Senator Margaret Pearse; an article reprinted from the 1966 edition by Seán Harling courier to Eamon De Valera and Stephen Ferguson’s article “The attack on the GPO Telegraph Room Easter Monday 1916.” There are also features on Michael Collins, Margaret Skinnider, Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa, Oscar Traynor and Maud Gonne MacBride.

This 96-page magazine takes a unique look at the events of Easter Week 1916. This 72-page issue of Ireland’s Military Story is concerned with the events around Easter 1916. Among its features are articles on an exhibition in the National Museum, Collins Barracks entitled “Proclaiming A Republic-The 1916 Rising,” a letter giving an eye witness account written by Charles Dickenson of the 1st Battalion Irish Association of Volunteer Training Corp and an account by Corporal Patrick Cassidy of St. John’s Ambulance in which he relates how he risked his life to give assistance.

This 76-page journal was published in November 2016 by the Myshall Drumphea Social History Group in County Carlow. It takes a nostalgic look at the parish one hundred years ago in 1916 and includes the Census of 1911, Church and Civil births and deaths including obituaries in the area in 1916, schools, farming techniques and blacksmiths. Br. William P. Allen’s List

This well illustrated publication by Seán Boyle includes a short biography of the 134 volunteers who were educated by the Christian Brothers at O’Connell School, North Richmond Street, Dublin and took part in the 1916 Easter Rising. Three of them were among the leaders executed; Éamonn Ceannt, Con Colbert and Seán Heuston. Among the better known names covered in the study are those of Seán Lemass who became Taoiseach and Seán T. O’Kelly who became President. The original list of participants was drawn up by Brother William Ahern in 1968.

Remembrance Service for the Children killed

This booklet was produced by the Glasnevin Trust for a Remembrance Service held at Glasnevin Cemetery on 1st May 2016 for the 40 children killed during the Rising. It includes a foreword by Joe Duffy of RTE and lists the names of 38 of the children, their ages and addresses. Two of the children, a boy and an infant were unidentified. The booklet also lists the names and their affiliation for all those who died during the Easter Rising.

This 45-page journal entitled, “Ardmore in 1916” was published by the Ardmore Tidy Towns Association in Waterford. It researches the residents of Ardmore in 1916 using as its principle sources the 1901 and 1911 Census Returns, the house and building registers attached to them and the Griffith’s Valuation Books. The journal contains many historical photographs and the 1916 School Register.

This bi-lingual book running to 727-pages published by Galway County Council tells the story of the 1916 Rising in County Galway. It examines the social and economic conditions in the county at that time and the roles played by Cumann na mBan and the leaders of the Rising such as Liam Mellows and Tom Kenny. It also provides accounts of the roles of Éamonn Ceannt and Pádraig Pearse.

Belfast Remembers 1916

This 104-page publication was launched on Saturday 14th May 2016 by the Belfast 1916 Centenary Committee at a Centenary Dinner at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast. Among the articles of particular note are; Irish Volunteers Belfast; Belfast Cumann na mBan 1914-1916; Republican Dead 1916 and Belfast Connections to the Rising. 1916 Belfast Heritage Trail

A 23-page booklet produced by Fáilte Feirste Thiar-Promoting West Belfast Tourism. It uncovers the story and roles of many individuals from Belfast who played a part in the 1916 Easter Rising. Fifteen granite plaques were commissioned and erected throughout the city for Eoin MacNeill, Bulmer Hobson, Winifred Carney, Joseph Campbell, Monahan Family, Corr Sisters, Seán MacEntee, Denis McCullough, Seamus Robinson, Seán MacDiarmada, Willowbank Huts, Roger Casement, Senator Joseph Connolly, Henry Osbourne and James Smith. The booklet includes a map showing the location of these plaques.

Life in 1916 Ireland-Stories from Statistics

This 93-page booklet was published on 8th March 2016 by the Central Statistics Office to illustrate what life was like for people living in Ireland 100 years ago. It uses the statistics from the Census that took place on 2nd April 1911 such as housing, marriage, transport and farming. The Census Records are included for; Countess Constance Markievicz nee Gore-Booth, Dr. Kathleen Lynn, Kathleen Clarke nee Daly, Thomas Clarke, Pádraig Pearse and James Connolly. There are also documents from the National Archives Image Library in London regarding the events of the Rising; Sentence of Death for Countess Markievicz, Notice of the Execution of Pearse, MacDonagh and Clarke, Sentence of Death carried out on prisoners Pearse, O’Hanrahan, Plunkett and Daly and Disturbances in Dublin: executions to cease until further notice. I also have a copy of the Irish version of this booklet; “An Saol in Éirinn sa bhliain 1916.”

A 52-page publication edited by Aidan Lambert and issued by the National Graves Association, Dublin to coincide with the rededication of the 1916 memorial and grave site in the St. Paul´s Section of Glasnevin Cemetery on 24th April 2016. Sligo Field Club 1916-2016 Commemoration

A booklet produced by the Sligo Field Club for a conference entitled “Ireland’s Women:Revolution and Remembrance” held between Friday 13th May 2016 and Sunday 15th May 2016 at Lissadell House, Sligo. In the Conference Chair was Olivia O’Leary, journalist and broadcaster and lectures were given by Dr. Laura McAtackney, Dr. Eve Morrison, Dr. Sonja Tiernan, Dr. Mary McAuliffe, Dr. Margaret Ward, Dr. Lauren Addington and Anne Haverty. On the Sunday, talks were given on local man Pat McDermott who participated in the Rising and the impact on the Anglo Irish community in the North West of Ireland. The conference hosted two plays; “Cathleen Ni Houlihan” and “Broken Glory” and also included a travelling exhibition from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland on Countess Markievicz and her sister Eva Gore-Booth.

Clontarf Town Hall Commemoration

A 4-page booklet produced by the 1916-2016 Relatives Association for an event held on 16th January 2016 at the Clontarf Town Hall to commemorate the final meeting of the Supreme Council of the IRB which was held here 100 years ago and at which the date for the Rising was set for Easter Sunday 23rd April 1916. Also a reproduction of a part of the song-sheet that was sold by friends of Peadar Kearney as a fundraiser when he was out of work after an injury. It was distributed with the booklet at this event.

A 72-page catalogue from the UCD Archives for the on-line exhibition “The Finest Men Alive: Documents of Imprisonment and Protest 1916-1917 which was launched on 29th June 2017.  The exhibition marks the 100th Anniversary of Lloyd George’s general amnesty of June 1917 which saw the release of the remaining Irish prisoners in British jails following the 1916 Easter Rising. The collections include officially issued prison notebooks, secret communications, diaries and Christmas and Patrick’s Day cards. There is also correspondence with family and friends or fellow republicans.
