Seizure of the Rotunda Concert Hall

On 18th January 1922, a large group of unemployed men calling themselves the Dublin Council of the Unemployed occupied the Rotunda Concert Hall at the north end of Dublin´s O´Connell Street. The Anglo Irish Treaty was not long signed and the Provisional Government was just a couple of days old when the group took control of the building and flew a red flag from the window in an early act of defiance towards the Irish Free State. The leader of the 120-strong group was a former soldier Liam O´Flaherty. He  was involved in radical politics and chairman of the Council of Unemployed and a founding member of the Communist Party of Ireland. Liam O´Flaherty wrote the group´s Manifesto to the citizens of Dublin asking for their support to procure work for the workless and maintenance until work is supplied and pointed out that men who had fought in the War of Independence and the First World War were without jobs while others had become rich.

The occupiers were divided into four companies each of which provided sentries posted at various points. As the days wore on a hostile crowd gathered outside. They breached the barrier and men armed with poles and planks made it into the Concert Hall. The police intervened and removed the attackers. They formed a cordon around the Rotunda and dispersed the crowd. Having held the Rotunda Concert Hall for four days the unemployed men exited the building and walked away quietly into the city putting an end to one of the lesser remembered episodes in the months following the signing of the Anglo Irish Treaty. A Centenary event was held on Saturday 22nd January 2022 by the Liam and Tom O´Flaherty Society.

Centenary of the Handover of Collins Barracks

On 18th May 2022, a ceremony took place marking the centenary of the handover of Collins Barracks. The event was attended by Defence Minister Simon Coveney and Defence Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Sean Clancy and descendants of some of the very first National Army soldiers who walked through the gates. Soldiers currently stationed at the barracks replicated the march into it via Victorian Arch after which a wreath was laid to commemorate all who had served in the barracks. A minute´s silence, the playing of the Last Post and the raising of the National Flag followed. The ceremony was rounded off with a flypast by two Air Corps PC12s. My booklet is signed by Lieutenant A. P. Keohane Officer Commanding Collins Barracks, Cork.
