This Presentation Pack was given to representatives from the 31 Local Authorities at the official launch of Ireland 2016 on 31st March 2015 in the National Museum of Ireland, Collin’s Barracks. Representing the Government was An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys, Minister of State Aodhán Ó Ríordáin and An Tánaiste Joan Burton.
The 31 Local Authorities Centenary Programmes of Events
Each of the 31 Local Authorities in Ireland issued a Centenary Programme of Events based on the Seven Strands of the Centenary Programme; State Ceremonial, Historical Reflection, An Teanga Bheo, Youth and Imagination, Cultural Expression, Community Participation and Global and Diaspora. These booklets include over 3,000 events organised across the country and represent the input of many thousands of people to mark the Centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising. I have arranged the programmes according to their Province.
The Province of Munster
Clare 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Clare 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Tuesday 1st December 2015 by Councillors James Breen and Pat Hayes at the De Valera Public Library in Ennis. It has a wide range of events including parades, book launches and commemoration ceremonies with a big focus on the two men who are associated with 1916 in Clare; Con Colbert and Peader Clancy.
Cork City 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Cork City 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Thursday 7th January 2016 by Councillor Chris O’Leary at the City Hall. The events planned for Cork City include the following; A State Ceremonial Event on Easter Monday 28th March 2016, an exhibition on the 1916 Rising and its connection to Cork City at the Cork Public Museum, a Centre of Commemoration at St. Peter’s Church on Main Street and a production “Sacrifice at Easter” by the Corcadorca Theatre Company.
Cork County 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Cork County 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Monday 14th December 2015 by Councillor Frank O’Flynn in County Hall. Highlight of the launch was the reading of the Irish Proclamation by Nora O’Riordan Grandniece of Thomas Kent. The booklet has 300 events planned across 70 locations, the largest number throughout the country. There is a big focus on Thomas Kent with events listed for Castlelyons and Fermoy. Other events of note include the following; a re-enactment in Castletownbere of a march by the Beara Volunteers from Eyeries to Lauragh; Cobh to open a 1916 Museum, Kanturk to hold a 1916 Centenary Concert entitled “Remembering the Risen People of Duhallow and Drinagh” to honour Seán Hurley the only Corkman to die during the Easter Rising.
Kerry 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Kerry 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Thursday 10th December 2015 by Minister Jimmy Deenihan at Tralee Library. Major highlights of this programme include: a Ceremonial Event at Banna Strand on 21st April 2016, a major exhibition on the life of Roger Casement at Kerry County Museum, the unveiling of a plaque at Valentia Island in honour of the Ring Brothers and a Commemoration of the First Casualties of the Rising at Ballykissane Pier.

Limerick 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Limerick 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Monday 7th December 2015 by Mayor Liam Galvin at the Granary Library. Its events of note include the following; “Roots of the Rising” featuring the family histories of Ned Daly and Con Colbert by Limerick Genealogy, a re-enactment march involving 300 Volunteers to Glenquin Castle and Memorial Gardens to be erected in Limerick City, Newcastlewest, Kilmallock and Rathkeale.
Tipperary 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
Highlights of this programme include; the May Bank Holiday Weekend dedicated to Thomas MacDonagh and the erection of a bronze statue in his honour in his home village of Cloughjordan, the unveiling of a plaque by the Third Tipperary Brigade Old IRA Commemoration Committee to Michael O’Callaghan, the only Tipperary man to engage the Crown Forces in 1916, the holding of the Tipperary County Fleadh and artist Gavin Freeborn will engage the public about 1916.
Waterford 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Waterford 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Friday 22nd January 2016 by Mayor John Cummins at Central Library on Lady Lane. It features a wide range of events including; a historical re-enactment of the 1916 Easter Rising by the 1848 Tricolour Committee, Waterford was the birthplace of Thomas Francis Meagher, an exhibition “Waterford 1916-The Birth of a Nation-Cultural Nationalism” and an online exhibition “Waterford its People and its Politics 1916-1918.”

Galway City 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Galway City 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Friday 4th December by Mayor Frank Fahy in City Hall. Its events of note include the following; “Remembering Éamonn Ceannt,” a weeklong celebration dedicated to his life and “Revolution in Ireland 1913-1923,” a new Gallery at City Hall Museum.
Galway County 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Galway County 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Friday 1st January 2016 by Councillor Peter Roche at the County Hall. This is one of the biggest programmes in the country with 150 events listed. Highlights of this programme include; A State Ceremonial Event in Athenry on Easter Monday 28th March 2016, the County Galway 1916 Rising Heritage Trail, the Éamonn Ceannt symposium to be held in his birthplace in Ballymoe and Teagasc will host a National Event “Commemorating Farming and Country Life 1916-2016.”
Leitrim 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Leitrim 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Sunday 10th January 2016 by Councillor Enda Stenson in Kiltyclogher Heritage Centre. There is a big focus on Seán MacDiarmada in this programme and events of note include; A Commemorative Vigil at the Seán MacDiarmada Monument in KIltyclogher and the Seán MacDiarmada Summer School.
Mayo 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
Highlights of this programme include; Opening of Ballina’s, “Jackie Clarke Collection 1916 Exhibition,” an exhibition on Cumann na mBan at the Castlebar Library and Westport will host an exhibition on the life of John MacBride.
Roscommon 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
This programme features a wide range of events including the following; “Paths to Freedom,” a two day event at King House that examines the many shades of green that existed in Ireland in the run-up to the 1916 Easter Rising, there are events to commemorate Paddy Moran who fought in Jacob’s Factory and the Roscommon Arts Centre has a programme that includes theatre, art, exhibitions and films.
Sligo 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Sligo 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Thursday 14th January 2016 by Councillor Rosaleen O’Grady at City Hall. Its wide range of events include; a day seminar at Lissadell House which concentrates on the women of the 1916 Easter Rising and “Music Ireland,” an evening of music on Sunday 24th April 2016 in Stephen Street Car Park featuring Sligo’s top internationally touring musical acts.

Cavan 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Cavan 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Monday 23rd November 2015 by Minister of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys at the Johnston Central Library. Highlights of this programme include; “Birth of a Nation: Cavan Remembers,” comprising a commemorative parade, solemn remembrance, musical performance and the theatrical event “The Proclamation,” the Quilters Project in Cavan Museum where a quilt depicting the involvement of women will be produced and events to honour Leitrim born Seán MacDiarmada, Francis Sheehy-Skeffington and Peter Paul Galligan.
Donegal 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Donegal 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Monday 18th January 2016 by Councillor Ciaran Brogan at the County House Lifford. This extensive programme has among its listed events; an exhibition “County Donegal in 1916,” at the Donegal County Museum and “1916 Recreation Clonmany 1916” which celebrates 100 years of parish life.

The Monaghan 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Monday 11th January 2016 by Minister of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys at the Iontas Centre in Castleblaney. This programme has a wide variety of events from historic talks and concerts to exhibitions including; “From a Whisper to a Roar,” a major exhibition at Monaghan County Museum and “Monaghan 1916-Brought back to Life,” which features a re-enactment of the 1916 Easter Rising in front of the Courthouse in Monaghan Town on 30th April 2016.

The Carlow 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Friday 29th January 2016 by Minister of State for Rural Economic Development and Social Enterprise Ann Phelan at the Carlow County Museum. Highlights of this programme include; a Memorial event for nurse Margaret Kehoe, Thomas Traynor Commemoration, 1916 Street Re-enactment and a 1916 Exhibition at Carlow College.
Dublin City 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Dublin City 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Wednesday 13th January 2016 by Lord Mayor Críona Ní Dhálaigh at the Dublin City and Archive. It lists a comprehensive programme of events and exhibitions across the city.
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Thursday 26th November 2015 by Councillor Barry Saul at the County Hall. Among its listed events are the following; a Ceremonial event at Deansgrange Cemetery, the resting place of 100 people involved in the Rising and the unveiling of a 2016 Commemorative Statue.
Fingal 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Fingal 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Tuesday 12th January 2016 by the Mayor of Fingal David O’Connor at the County Hall in Swords. Events of note include; a special programme of events from the Seamus Ennis Arts Centre and a major exhibition at Fingal Libraries Local Study and Archives.

The Kildare 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Monday 12th October 2015 by the Mayor of Kildare Ivan Keatley at the Council Chambers Aras Chill Dara, Devoy Park. Highlights of this programme include; the launch of the 1916 Rising Oral History, Monasterevin Rising featuring a parade and re-enactments, Maynooth Flag Raising Ceremony to remember the “Maynooth 15” and the “1916 Sackville Project” commemorating the lives of the ordinary civilians killed during the Rising.
Kilkenny 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Kilkenny 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Friday 11th December 2015 by Minister of State Ann Phelan in Rothe House. There is a big focus on Thomas MacDonagh who lived and worked in Kilkenny including a weeklong event entitled “Seachtain Thomáis Mhic Dhomnachadha from 30th April to 9th May.
Laois 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Laois 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Thursday 26th November 2015 by Councillor Catherine Fitzgerald. This programme has a wide variety of events including; the James Fintan Lalor Autumn School, a re-enactment of the key Laois events from the 1916 Rising and a major exhibition of the people, places and events in Laois during the 1916 Rising displayed in the libraries at Mountmellick and Abbeyleix.
Longford 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Longford 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Friday 20th November 2015 by Councillor Gerry Warnock at the Backstage Theatre. Events of note include; a commemorative parade and family day on 24th April 2016 in Longford Town, an exhibition “Longford and 1916” by Longford Library and a reception for the relatives of the fourteen Longford people who participated in the 1916 Easter Rising.
Louth 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Louth 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Tuesday 30th January 2016 by Councillor Peter Savage at Dundalk Library. Highlights of this programme include; an exhibition in Louth County Archives entitled, “Óglaigh na hÉireann 1913-1918: the Irish Volunteers”, an exhibition at the County Museum Dundalk entitled “Birth of a Nation” and “Macalla 1916: Comhaltas Concert” an orchestral suite of music composed by Michael Rooney.

The Meath 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Thursday 28th January 2016 by the CEO of Meath County Council Jackie Maguire and Councillor Brian Fitzgerald. Highlights of this programme include; A State Ceremonial Event in Ashbourne on Easter Monday 28th March 2016 and a major exhibition in the Solstice Gallery.

The Offaly 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Thursday 3rd December 2015 by Councillor Barry Cowen at Aras an Chontae in Tullamore. Events of note include; “Offaly 100,” a Ceremony of Commemoration on 20th March 2016 for the 1916 Tullamore incident and events to honour Eamonn Bulfin and Peadar Bracken.

The South Dublin County 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Wednesday 2nd December 2015 by Mayor Sarah Holland at the County Hall, Tallagh. Highlights of this programme include; an exhibition entitled, “South Dublin and the 1916 Rising” at the County Library in Tallagh, an exhibition “Dublin Fire Brigade and the 1916 Rising” and the launch of the South Dublin and the 1916 Rising Oral History Collection.
West Meath 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The West Meath 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Wednesday 27th January 2016 by Councillor Paul Daly at the Atrium of Aras in Mullingar. Events of note include; an exhibition “A Terrible Beauty is Born” in the Aidan Heavey Library in Athlone, and an exhibition entitled “100 Art and the People the Land” hosted by the Luan Gallery in Athlone.

The Wexford 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Monday 9th November 2015 by Councillor Tony Dempsey at the County Council Offices, Carricklawn. This extensive programme includes the following; A State Ceremonial Event in Enniscorthy on Easter Monday 28th March 2016, Ceremony to Commemorate Michael O’Hanrahan born in New Ross and a Ceremony to Commemorate, the Irish Volunteer Leader Robert Brennan.

Wicklow 1916 Centenary Programme of Events Booklet
The Wicklow 1916 Centenary Programme of Events was officially launched on Friday 16th October 2015 by Minister of State Simon Harris at the Ashford Community and Heritage Centre. Highlights of this programme include the following; the development of a downloadable app “1916 Wicklow’s Life,” featuring extracts from County Wicklow newspapers and the Dunlavin Forum will host a village parade and the unveiling of the restored 1798 monument. A plaque to commemorate 1916 will be added to the monument.
