Galway

 

A publication entitled “Cumann na mBan: County Galway Dimensions” from Galway County Council which portrays the pivotal role of women in the revolutionary period and in particular the important contribution of Cumann na mBan. It gives a brief outline of the history of the organisation, followed by a selection of extracts as reported in the local newspapers, as well as sample accounts of some Cumann na mBan members such as Ada English, Alice Cashel, Eva O’Flaherty, Mai O’Dea-Fahy, Kate Armstrong, Mary McTiernan and Cissie Davoren (nee Lally). It also contains recollections of Bridget Morrissey, as well as some witness statements and pension records from the Bureau of Military History Archives. Included with the publication is a CD with a new recording of “The Soldiers of Cumann na mBan” written by 1916 participant Brian O’Higgins, the week before the 1916 Easter Rising. It is arranged and sung by Corrandulla musician Joseph Forde.

A 23-page booklet entitled, “Galway Rising Centenary Commemoration 1916-2016” published by the Killeeneen/Moyode Centenary Committee of Clarinbridge. It contains a comprehensive account of Liam Mellows and his Volunteers and the 1916 Rising locally. The booklet also provides lists of the Galway Volunteers around the county drawn from newspapers, records of those interned, recipients of the 1916 State Pension and local sources. It was launched on St. Patrick’s night 17th March 2016 in Cheevers Pub Clarinbridge.

A Commemorative Map and 1916 Heritage Trail developed by Galway County Council and the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology which gives an insight into the events, places and people associated with the 1916 Easter Rising in Galway. The map was launched on Friday 29th April 2016 in the Lady Gregory Hotel.

An events programme from Galway City and County Libraries entitled, “Living Literature-Writings from the Cradle to the Grave.” This series of talks and exhibitions examine literature and life in society during the revolutionary era.

A bilingual 10-page brochure in English and Irish for the official opening of the Éamonn Ceannt Commemorative Garden on 21st September 2016 at Ballymoe County Galway. A Copy of the Proclamation and a Souvenir Pen were also distributed at this event.

An advertising poster produced for the play “Tom Clarke’s One True Love” This play was written by Killian McGuinness and performed by the Corn Mill Theatre Group. It tells the life story of Tom Clarke and performances took place in the Corn Mill Theatre, Carrigallen on 20th, 21st, 22nd, 28th and 30th July.

A publication entitled, “Paper Bloom” which documents the exhibition of the same name by artist Katie Moore at the Ballina Civic Offices. The exhibition commemorates the 1916 Easter Rising incorporating the Jackie Clarke collection. The artist created an installation structure based on the measurements of Pádraig Pearse’s cell in Kilmainham Gaol and covered it in 5,500 peace lilies handmade from fabric.
